Motbung Bazar found itself in the clutches of tension as two Kuki youths, subjected to brutal assaults by well-armed Kuki militants suspected to be KRA (U) cadres, succumbed to their injuries last night. This tragic event unfolded in Motbung Bazar under the Sapermeina police station, Kangpokpi district.
Under the cover of darkness, well-armed Kuki militants, believed to be affiliated with KRA (U), arrived at Motbung Bazar from a nearby camp. They unleashed merciless attacks on several youths, accusing them of drug use, as per sources.
In the aftermath of the militants’ departure, three individuals were swiftly transported to Letpao Hospital in Motbung Bazar. Regrettably, two of them succumbed to their injuries.
The deceased individuals were identified as Jangminlal of Sapermeina and Jangminlen of Kholep village. Simultaneously, another individual, Haominthang (37), son of Denkhai from Thingbangjang village, sustained multiple injuries and was evacuated to Dimapur for advanced treatment due to the severity of his condition.
As news of the demise of the two Kuki youths spread, a large unruly mob spilled onto the streets of Motbung Bazar, staging a protest against the armed Kuki militants. The enraged mob set fire to some shops and other items in Motbung Bazar. In the midst of the chaotic protest, sounds resembling gunshots, suspected to be fired by Kuki militants, echoed in the Motbung Bazar area last night, according to sources. With the angry mob and the armed Kuki militants on the brink of confrontation, a tense situation enveloped the area throughout the night.
Reinforcement teams from Kangpokpi district police rushed to the scene, bringing the situation under control in the wee hours. Despite an ongoing public meeting seeking a resolution to the events of the previous night, the area remained tense, as reported by sources.
