In connection with the shooting incident during the first phase of the Lok Sabha poll in Manipur on April 19, three individuals were remanded into judicial custody by the Special Judge (NIA), Imphal East, on Friday.

The accused individuals, identified as Leichombam Jamshan Singh, Khumukcham Angamba, and Nongthombam Ratan, were presented before the court from police custody.

They were apprehended by police after a pursuit near Imphal-Ukhrul Road.

The allegations against them include entering the polling station and firing shots toward the public, resulting in the injury of a civilian.

In response, angered members of the public damaged the EVM and other equipment at the polling booth.

According to the report submitted by the investigation officer, the accused individuals admitted to the allegations during interrogation.

One of the accused, Nongthombam Ratan, confessed to his involvement with the RPF/PLA outfit and provided details of his activities prior to the incident.

Additionally, a .32 Pistol with 8 live rounds and Rs. 1.5 lakh in cash were seized during the arrest.

During the court hearing, the special public prosecutor highlighted that efforts to apprehend the accused’s associates have been unsuccessful, and certain investigative procedures, such as witness examination and forensic analysis, are yet to be completed.

Despite the bail applications filed by the accused individuals, the court deemed it appropriate to remand them into judicial custody until May 10.

However, the bail applications will be considered in a regular hearing scheduled for April 30, along with the bail objection report and case diary, as mentioned in the court’s order.
