Three bunkers belonging to Kuki militants were destroyed following rocket attacks in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, according to a statement from the Manipur Police.
The police reported that the attacks took place in Mualsang and Laika Mualsau villages, resulting in the destruction of two bunkers in Mualsang and one in Laika Mualsau. The attacks were part of an escalation of violence involving Kuki militants who deployed long-range rockets in Bishnupur district, leading to civilian casualties.
A senior citizen, identified as RK Rabei, 78, from Moirang Phiwangbam Leikai, was killed in the attack. Six other civilians sustained injuries in Moirang Khoiru Leikai. The attacks prompted immediate combing operations by the police and additional security forces in the affected hill ranges.
Bishnupur District police, including the Superintendent of Police (SP), rushed to the scene and engaged in a firefight with the militants. The police successfully repelled the attack. A military helicopter was deployed for aerial patrol to ensure security in the area. Senior police officers, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), were present to oversee the situation and implement countermeasures.
Authorities conducted high-level security meetings to assess the law and order situation. They have increased security measures, including the movement of essential goods along National Highways 37 and 2, ensuring safe passage for 115 and 153 vehicles, respectively. Security convoys are provided in sensitive areas to maintain order.
A total of 101 checkpoints were established across various districts, leading to the detention of 131 individuals for violations. The police urged the public to disregard rumors and verify information through the Central Control Room’s dedicated number. Additionally, the public was requested to return any looted arms, ammunition, and explosives to the nearest police or security forces.
While the situation in Manipur remains tense, the authorities assert that it is under control. The continuous efforts of the police and security forces aim to stabilize the region and prevent further violence.
