Unidentified miscreants hurled a suspected hand grenade on thursday night at the residence of Elangbam Brojendro Singh, managing director of Salai Holding Private Limited, located in Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai Leirak Macha. The grenade exploded, causing partial damage to the property.
Police reports indicate the incident occurred around 11:30 pm. The explosion damaged floor tiles, the courtyard, and the galvanized roof, but no casualties were reported. A case has been registered at Imphal West police station.
Elangbam Brojendro Singh, 49, son of the late E Bhubaneshwor, oversees Salai Holdings Private Limited. The financial institution was shuttered in 2020 after its SMART bank was implicated in an alleged Ponzi scheme.
According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), “Salai Group of Companies, Imphal, registered under The Bombay Money Lenders Act, 1946, was not authorized to collect deposits but had been illegally doing so, promising a 3 percent monthly interest, constituting an illegal Ponzi scheme/money circulation scheme.”
As of this report, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Local Meira Paibis have condemned the attack, emphasizing the potential danger to innocent residents in the densely populated area.
RK Indira, a local meira paibi, remarked that the perpetrators could have approached the local club or meira paibi to resolve any disputes peacefully. She called for an end to such violent incidents in the future.
