Intense weather struck Senapati district, Manipur, on Tuesday, bringing havoc to villages, homes, and crops. The sudden onslaught took residents by surprise, leaving them distressed as they coped with the aftermath.
According to reports, the hailstorms hit Mao and its vicinity, including Chingmei Khullen village and Laii village under Paomata sub-division in Senapati district, around 3:30 pm. Areas such as Sangkunglung, Chakha, and Willong Khunou under the Willong sub-division were also impacted.
The adverse weather caused widespread destruction, with many houses reduced to rubble and large areas of crops destroyed by the relentless rain and hail. In the Mao area, particularly under the Song sub-division, heavy hail storms damaged most villages, causing extensive harm to residential buildings.
Even along the vital Imphal-Dimapur stretch of NH2 passing through Mao areas, the hailstorm’s fury was relentless, worsening the situation for affected communities. The calamity extended beyond homes, as strong thunderstorms accompanying the hailstorm caused significant damage, leaving several residents homeless.
The destruction of crops, crucial for villagers’ livelihoods and at the peak of harvest, worsened the economic hardships of affected communities. The magnitude of the devastation highlights the urgent need for relief efforts to aid those dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.
Moreover, the neighboring Dima Hasao district in Assam also suffered from the heavy hailstorm, adding to the challenges faced by communities in the region.
