The Serou and Sugnu areas of Waikhong Sub-Division in Manipur’s Kakching District have been placed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) due to concerns over potential disturbances to public peace and order.
District Magistrate Rohit Anand, IAS, issued the order on June 28, following reports from the Superintendent of Police, Kakching, about possible unlawful activities by anti-social elements.
Effective from 12:00 pm on June 28 for three weeks, the order prohibits the assembly of five or more persons that may become unlawful, carrying firearms, swords, sticks, stones, or other lethal weapons, unauthorized construction activities, and flying drones without written permission. Government personnel, authorities, and security forces involved in law enforcement and essential services are exempt from these restrictions.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Waikhong Sub-Division has been appointed as the Executive Magistrate on duty, with the authority to disperse unlawful assemblies, halt unauthorized construction, and maintain public peace.
The Executive Magistrate is authorized to seek assistance from the District Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and Assam Rifles to disperse gatherings that threaten public security if necessary.
This urgent order will remain in effect until further notice, aiming to prevent potential unrest and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas of Kakching District.
