Frustration over the perceived negligence of the government in deploying state forces to Lamlai Assembly Constituency has led to widespread protests and an indefinite bandh along the Imphal-Ukhrul road, effective Thursday.
The Lamlai Kendra Village Volunteers Force (LKVVF) organized a public meeting to address concerns about insufficient state force deployment and the continued presence of the JAT Regiment at Uyok Ching in Thamnapokpi, an area vulnerable to Kuki militant attacks.
Originally scheduled for August 7, the bandh was postponed after assurances from Lamlai MLA Kh Ibomcha and Imphal East SP to enhance security measures. However, persistent attacks attributed to Kuki militants led the LKVVF to resume their protest actions.
Villagers have accused central forces of inaction during recent bomb attacks, heightening local tensions. In response to the public meeting held at Yaingpokpi Bazar in Imphal East, LKVVF commander-in-chief Y Bosan announced the re-implementation of the bandh, which has resulted in the blockade of the Imphal-Ukhrul road at Yaingpokpi Bazar. While general traffic is diverted, emergency and essential services are being allowed through after scrutiny.
Y Bosan has called for the deployment of at least 30 state forces equipped to protect the community and announced plans to expand the bandh’s impact in collaboration with local bodies from Lamlong to Yaingpokpi, apologizing in advance for any resulting inconvenience.
Recent militant attacks have caused casualties, including a young volunteer injured in a bomb attack on September 1, underscoring the ongoing volatility in Thamnapokpi. Political activist Sapamcha Kangleipal, visiting the injured at JNIMS, condemned the rising violence and expressed solidarity with affected residents, pledging continued support for the victims amidst the crisis.
