Human rights activists and civil society organizations have urged the Manipur government to immediately halt the deportation of Myanmar refugees, following the controversial deportation of 12 Myanmar nationals, including a minor, back to their strife-torn homeland.
The refugees had sought sanctuary in Manipur to escape the brutal conflict ravaging their country. However, their deportation has sparked widespread concern and outrage, with critics slamming the move as “inhumane” and “illegal”.
The appeal, signed by a cross-section of prominent activists and academics, implores the state government to recognize the refugees’ right to seek asylum in India and provide them with necessary protection and safety.
“The Manipur government’s actions are a clear violation of India’s international obligations and its own constitutional provisions,” declared a spokesperson for the human rights group. “We demand an immediate halt to further deportations and urge the government to adopt a more humane approach towards these refugees.”
The development has sparked a heated debate on the refugee crisis in Manipur, with many calling for a more compassionate approach towards the displaced Myanmar nationals.
