Prof. Bimol Akoijam, the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Inner Manipur, has called for the upgrade of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) during a session in the Lok Sabha. He directed his request to the Union Health Minister, stressing the vital role RIMS plays in providing healthcare services in the region and its potential to enhance its contributions on a national scale.
In his address, MP Akoijam highlighted several key reasons for the proposed upgrade:
- Historical Significance and Performance: Established 52 years ago, RIMS has been a cornerstone in the healthcare landscape of Manipur and the surrounding northeastern states. The institute has a proven track record of producing qualified medical professionals and delivering high-quality healthcare services.
- Regional Impact: RIMS serves not only the population of Manipur but also patients from neighboring states and countries, including Myanmar. This strategic importance underscores the need for enhanced facilities and resources that an AIIMS status would provide.
- Medical and Educational Excellence: Akoijam pointed out that RIMS has consistently maintained high standards in both medical education and healthcare delivery. Upgrading it to AIIMS would further boost its capacity to provide advanced medical training and specialized healthcare services.
- Mental Health and Drug Issues: The MP also raised the issue of the mental health crisis and the rampant drug-related problems in the region. He advocated for the establishment of a centrally-run mental health institute to address these pressing issues effectively.
The call for upgrading RIMS comes at a time when the healthcare infrastructure in India, particularly in the northeastern states, is under significant strain. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in the healthcare system, making it imperative to strengthen and expand existing medical facilities. An AIIMS designation would bring in more funding, advanced medical technology, and improved healthcare services, benefiting the entire region.
MP Bimol Akoijam’s appeal for upgrading RIMS to AIIMS status reflects a broader vision of improving healthcare accessibility and quality in the northeastern region of India. By transforming RIMS into an AIIMS, the institute could better serve the healthcare needs of a larger population, providing specialized care and advanced medical education. The proposed upgrade would not only enhance RIMS’ capabilities but also contribute significantly to the overall development of healthcare infrastructure in the region.
