Manipur Law Minister Th Basantakumar has raised concerns about the increasing availability of arms among youths in the state, warning that criminals could exploit this situation for financial gain and other illegal activities. Speaking at the Manipur Press Club during a media sensitisation programme, he emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing these issues, asserting that societal progress is hindered when criminal elements dominate.
The minister also discussed a proposal to allow legally sanctioned youth groups involved in safeguarding Manipur to carry arms, contingent on proper training and organizational structuring. This measure, he suggested, could enhance the security of the state.
In addition, Basantakumar announced plans to introduce a stringent bill aimed at curbing the culture of bandh and blockade in Manipur. The proposed legislation would classify these activities as non-bailable offenses, ensuring that offenders are jailed immediately after being presented before a magistrate. He expressed confidence that this bill, once enacted, would deter such disruptions for five to ten years.
Addressing the media’s role in a robust democracy, the minister underscored the importance of accurate information dissemination and called for collaboration among the legislature, executive, judiciary, and media to prioritize development and improve living standards across Manipur.
