The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has initiated an inquiry into a disturbing incident on Wednesday evening, where two minors in school uniforms were subjected to trauma.
The incident, which occurred along the Imphal Airport to Keishampat stretch of Tiddim Road in Imphal West, was widely circulated on social media and reported by various news outlets, highlighting severe child rights violations, according to an MCPCR statement.
The MCPCR acknowledged the operational challenges faced by police personnel during the apprehension of an accused individual accompanied by his children.
“Despite these challenges, it is imperative to adhere to legal protocols, especially those concerning children, in such critical situations,” stated the MCPCR.
In response, the MCPCR plans to issue notices to the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, and the Director of the Social Welfare Department, demanding a detailed report on the incident and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The incident involved a violent confrontation between Moirangthem Totomshana @Nongsaba, a recent candidate in the 18th Lok Sabha election from Heirok village, and the police, who were escorting him from Imphal Airport.
Eyewitnesses reported the minors running through traffic, crying for their father’s release, and fainting momentarily due to the distressing scene.
