In a significant move to combat illegal immigration, the Manipur Legislative Assembly has formed a House Committee dedicated to addressing this critical issue. The decision was made following a unanimous vote, prompted by a calling attention motion introduced by Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLA Leishiyo Keishing during the assembly session on Tuesday.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh presented the resolution to establish the committee, emphasizing the urgent need to address the increasing concerns related to illegal immigration in the state. The resolution was supported by members across party lines, reflecting a collective commitment to tackle this pressing problem.
The specific composition of the committee and its terms of reference are set to be determined in upcoming private sessions of the assembly. However, it has been indicated that the committee will focus on the identification, verification, and deportation of illegal immigrants, particularly in districts like Kamjong, which have been significantly affected.
MLA Leishiyo Keishing, who initiated the motion, highlighted the inadequacies of the current Indian Foreigner Act, arguing that it has been insufficient in curbing illegal immigration in Manipur. Keishing stressed the need for stronger legislative and administrative measures, citing the adverse socio-economic and security impacts of unchecked immigration in the region.
The issue of illegal immigration in Manipur is not just a state concern but a matter of national security. The porous international borders and the strategic location of Manipur make it vulnerable to cross-border infiltration. The establishment of the committee is seen as a step towards reinforcing border security and ensuring the integrity of national borders.
Illegal immigration has been a longstanding issue in Manipur, exacerbated by its proximity to the India-Myanmar border. Over the years, there have been numerous reports of undocumented migrants settling in various parts of the state, leading to demographic changes and tensions among local communities.
The newly formed committee is expected to conduct thorough investigations and present recommendations to the assembly. This may include proposals for legislative amendments, enhanced border patrol measures, and collaboration with central government agencies to implement effective immigration controls.
The formation of the House Committee marks a proactive approach by the Manipur Legislative Assembly to address illegal immigration. As the committee begins its work, there is a sense of cautious optimism that this initiative will lead to tangible improvements in managing and mitigating the challenges posed by illegal immigration in the state.
