In a resolute demonstration of support for the prevailing economic blockade, staged in objection to the proclamation by Tengnoupal village volunteers, instructing shopkeepers to withhold essential commodities from state forces in Moreh, the vigilant meira paibis of the Sagang area took decisive action. They intercepted a Tata DI truck transporting 100 bags of rice destined for Churachandpur, seizing the opportunity to underscore their stance on this contentious directive.
The incident unfolded at Sagang bazar on Tuesday, where community leaders, represented by W. Ashalata (Naotombi), the secretary of Sagang Meira Paibi, provided insights into the interception. This strategic move took place as part of the ongoing counter economic blockade initiative in the valley districts, symbolizing a unified front against the perceived injustices.
Upon immediate investigation, the meira paibis discovered that the rice bags were en route to Churachandpur. The consignment’s origins traced back to Nongmaithem Memtombi, a resident of Kumbi Mayai Leikai Ward No 6, while the vehicle was operated by Athang Kom from Sagang.
Elaborating on the situation, Ashalata revealed that information obtained from Athang Kom and Memtombi disclosed that the rice bags were intended for delivery to Johnson Kom of Sagang at Lukhumbi village, adding a layer of intricacy to the unfolding narrative.
Following the interception, both Memtombi and the driver were promptly handed over to Kumbi police, led by the Officer in Charge (OC). Simultaneously, the 100 confiscated rice bags found new purpose as they were redistributed for use by volunteers actively engaged in safeguarding Meetei villages. This initiative aimed to fortify communities against potential threats posed by Kuki militants during these challenging times.
Expressing a profound sense of remorse, Ashalata conveyed her disappointment over the involvement of the Kom community in transporting rice to Churachandpur, especially amidst the prevailing crisis. In a plea for future cooperation, she urged the Kom community to abstain from participating in such activities, acknowledging the sustained efforts and sacrifices made by both Meetei and Kom women vigilantes who have been unwaveringly ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
