Kuki-Zo women, under the Committee on Tribal Unity Sadar Hills, have launched a determined protest against the proposed withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the Sadar Hills region. Starting August 2, demonstrations began at Gamgiphai, with participants urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to reconsider the decision, citing the vital role of Assam Rifles in maintaining regional security amid ethnic tensions.
The protests, centered in front of the 22 Assam Rifles Post in Kangpokpi District, involve women vigilantly monitoring the paramilitary forces’ movements. They have vowed to escalate their actions if the withdrawal proceeds, emphasizing the necessity of Assam Rifles’ presence for peace and stability.
Further demonstrations are planned in Saikul, Leimakhong, and Motbung. Protesters have voiced slogans such as “Assam Rifles – Friends of the Hills People” and “Don’t Remove Assam Rifles.” The Kuki Inpi South West Sadar Hills has condemned the decision to replace Assam Rifles with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), describing it as irrational and detrimental to community safety.
Ng. Lun Kipgen, spokesperson for the Committee on Tribal Unity, highlighted the peaceful nature of the protests and warned against potential escalations. The community appeals to the government for a strategic approach to ensure continued peace in the region.
As the situation develops, the Kuki-Zo community remains steadfast in their demand for the reassessment of the withdrawal decision, emphasizing the critical role of Assam Rifles in safeguarding their security.
