The Special Judge overseeing cases related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) in Ukhrul delivered a verdict sentencing K Ramyo Shimray, aged 61, to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. This decision comes after Shimray was found guilty of sexually assaulting two minor girls under the provisions of POCSO.
According to the court’s findings, Shimray committed the heinous act between July 28 and August 2, 2018, at a location within Ukhrul district. The judgment was pronounced on April 24, with the quantum of penalty being announced on April 29.
The case was brought to light when the father of the victims lodged a complaint at the Ukhrul police station on August 8, 2018. He alleged that his two daughters, aged 8 and 6, had been subjected to multiple instances of sexual assault by Shimray, who hails from Lunghar village, Ukhrul.
Following the complaint, the Ukhrul police station initiated legal proceedings against Shimray, leading to his trial in court.
Taking into account Shimray’s advanced age, health condition, and financial circumstances, alongside the severity of his actions against the young victims, who happened to be his neighbors, the court handed down a sentence of 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, Shimray was ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2000 for the offense, as stipulated under Section 5(l)(m) read with Section 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional three months of simple imprisonment, as per the court’s directive.
Furthermore, the court clarified that any time spent by the accused in judicial custody would be credited towards his prison term, in accordance with Section 428 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
As for the matter of compensating the victims under the Manipur Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019, the court indicated that such compensation would be considered upon the submission of appropriate applications.
