Two Meitei individuals narrowly escaped an abduction attempt by Kuki miscreants in Leimakhong Bazar, Kangpokpi district, Manipur, following a timely intervention by the Indian Army. The incident occurred around 2 PM on Friday when Konthoujam James, 41, and Laishram Sunder, 39, both traveling to meet a contractor at Leimakhong Army Camp, were captured after mistakenly entering Leimakhong Bazar.
Upon being identified as Meiteis, they were forcefully made to climb into an autorickshaw. Army personnel from the 57th Mountain Division, stationed nearby, noticed the abduction and intervened, resulting in a physical confrontation with the abductors. During the rescue, a mob gathered, accusing the Army of partiality and pelting stones at the military personnel.
Both rescued individuals received medical attention at a military hospital, with Sunder sustaining minor injuries and James severely injured. Police from Sekmai Station responded promptly, but evacuation was delayed due to blockages by the Kuki miscreants. The Army eventually transported the rescued men around 7 PM.
This incident underscores the ongoing ethnic tensions in the region and the critical role of security forces in maintaining order.
