Eight civilians were rescued by the Indian Army following a severe road accident in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on January 8, 2025. The accident occurred near Khunku Naga village in the Leimakhong area, when a truck carrying the individuals veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge.

The rescue operation was initiated immediately after the chief of Henjang village informed the authorities about the accident. The Indian Army swiftly deployed a team from its Leimakhong base to the scene, overcoming challenging terrain to reach the victims.

On arrival, the rescue team discovered the overturned truck at the bottom of the gorge. The team worked with urgency to extract the injured passengers and transport them to safety.

All eight individuals were evacuated to the nearby military hospital, where they received immediate medical attention. Army medical personnel administered first aid and trauma care to stabilize the injured. While the details of their conditions remain undisclosed, authorities confirmed that the timely intervention helped prevent fatalities.

The accident occurred along a stretch of road known for its precarious conditions, with narrow lanes and steep inclines contributing to frequent mishaps. Local residents have long expressed concerns about the need for improved road infrastructure and safety measures in the region.

The Indian Army, which maintains a significant presence in Manipur due to its strategic importance and history of insurgency, has often been at the forefront of humanitarian assistance in such emergencies. This rescue operation underscores the army’s role in providing critical support to remote and underserved areas.

The incident has reignited discussions about the urgent need to enhance road safety standards in Manipur’s hilly districts. Experts have emphasized the importance of regular maintenance, proper signage, and driver training programs to mitigate the risk of accidents in the region.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident, with initial reports suggesting that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to slippery conditions or mechanical failure.

The Indian Army’s prompt response in rescuing the injured highlights its commitment to serving the civilian population during emergencies. As the rescued individuals recover under medical care, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the transportation challenges faced by residents of Manipur’s rugged terrains.

Efforts to improve road infrastructure and safety remain critical to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
