In a significant diplomatic overture, the United States has called upon India to leverage its close ties with Russia to persuade President Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking at a press briefing, a senior US official praised India’s diplomatic prowess and expressed hope that New Delhi would use its “significant influence” to urge Moscow to cease hostilities.
“India has a unique relationship with Russia, and we believe they can play a crucial role in encouraging Putin to end the war,” the official said.
The development comes as the conflict in Ukraine enters its fifth month, with escalating tensions between Russia and the West.
India, which has historically maintained good relations with Russia, has so far refrained from publicly condemning Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.
The US appeal to India is seen as a strategic move to rally global support for its stance on the Ukraine crisis.
