In a tragic incident at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, four individuals lost their lives in a school shooting on September 4, 2024. The victims included two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie. Nine others sustained injuries but are expected to recover.
Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student, has been identified as the suspected shooter. He was apprehended at the scene and is facing four counts of felony murder. Authorities revealed that Colt’s father, Colin Gray, 54, has also been arrested. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children.
The charges against Colin Gray stem from his admission that he bought his son an AR-15 style rifle as a Christmas gift, which was used in the shooting. This purchase occurred despite a previous FBI investigation in May 2023, which involved online threats related to a potential school shooting. At that time, both father and son denied any involvement, and no further legal action was taken due to insufficient evidence.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the exact motives behind the shooting. Classes at Apalachee High School have been suspended, and the community is mourning the loss of the victims.
