Okram Ibobi, former Chief Minister of Manipur and leader of the Congress Legislative Party, has called on the state government to seek assistance from the Central government to secure the release of two youths held hostage by Kuki militants. The militants captured the youths while they were en route to a recruitment event for the SSC-GD at the Assam Rifles camp.
Ibobi, speaking at the 128th birth anniversary of social reformer Jananeta Hijam Irawat in Imphal, emphasized the potential role of the Assam Rifles in pressuring the militants for the safe release of the hostages. He highlighted the presence of Central paramilitary forces, including the Assam Rifles, in maintaining law and order in the region, especially along the Indo-Myanmar border.
The three youths, identified as Thoubal Ningombam Johnson (25), Oinam Thoithoi (27), and Thokchom Thoithoiba, were abducted last Friday. While Johnson was rescued by the Assam Rifles and handed over to the Manipur Police, the other two remain captive. The militants reportedly demand the release of Mark T Haokip, currently in NIA custody, in exchange for the hostages.
Ibobi urged the state government to actively engage with the Ministry of Home Affairs to resolve the situation swiftly, cautioning against the escalation of violence. He also noted the need for the Assam Rifles to play a proactive role in mitigating such incidents to prevent further community strife.
In related developments, various organizations and political leaders have expressed similar concerns. Yambem Laba, President of the Good Governance Party, appealed for the immediate release of the abducted youths and criticized the tactic of using hostages to make demands. Laba reiterated that the state and central governments bear responsibility for the safety of the hostages.
The crisis has sparked protests across Manipur, with demands for the abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with Kuki militants and the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the state. The People’s Alliance for Peace and Progress, Manipur (PAPPM) has led these protests, emphasizing the need for stringent action to restore peace.
This ongoing conflict underscores the fragile security situation in Manipur and the urgent need for effective intervention to ensure stability and safety for all communities involved.
