In a solemn development, the grieving family of Ngangom Nevy, whose life met a brutal end, has claimed his decomposed body from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue in Imphal. This poignant occasion transpired following a negotiated understanding between the government and the Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed in the wake of Nevy’s tragic and gruesome killing.
At a press conference held at the morgue’s premises, Chanthoi, the Convenor of the JAC, delineated a series of demands articulated by the committee. Among these demands is the immediate removal of armed individuals purportedly affiliated with the Kuki community from the state. Additionally, the committee seeks the replacement of the 37th Assam Rifles and the provision of suitable employment opportunities for the grieving family of Ngangom Nevy.
Expressing deep concern and condemnation for the inhumane killing, Chanthoi characterized the perpetrators as armed individuals associated with the Kuki Nacro terrorists. The committee’s call for decisive government action includes a plea for the expulsion of these elements from the state, emphasizing the urgency of preventing such incidents in the future.
Chanthoi also raised pointed questions regarding the alleged negligence or ineffectiveness of the 37 Assam Rifles, given that the murder occurred in close proximity to the 37 Assam Rifles gate. The committee demands accountability and insists on the removal of the 37th Assam Rifles from the area, underlining the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
With assurances from the state government to address the committee’s demands, the JAC took custody of Ngangom Nevy’s body, clearing the way for the performance of his last rites on the same day. Chanthoi conveyed the committee’s profound dismay at the brutal manner in which armed miscreants allegedly claimed Nevy’s life.
Ngangom Nevy had been missing since May 28, and the discovery of his decomposed body in Sokom Village under Chandel district on January 31 sent shockwaves through the community. The incident gained wider attention following the circulation of a gruesome beheading video on social media, intensifying calls for justice, accountability, and concrete measures to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future. The community awaits a thorough and expeditious investigation to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure the safety and security of its members.
