Nine civil organizations in Manipur have formally called for the removal of the Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister, Letpao Haokip, citing his extended absence as a significant impediment to the advancement of tribal policies and initiatives within the state.

In a concerted effort, the Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF), along with eight other civil society organizations (CSOs), submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Friday, urging immediate action.

This appeal aligns with a recent demand from the Manipur Naga Youth Organisation, which has also pressed for Minister Haokip’s replacement.

Addressing the media at the Tribal Market Management Committee office in New Checkon, Imphal, IPF President Ashang Kasar disclosed that the coalition of nine CSOs held a consultative meeting, resulting in two primary resolutions.

“Firstly, we insist on the replacement of Letpao Haokip. Secondly, we urge all involved parties to cease the persistent monetary demands and intimidation directed at small business owners in Imphal,” Kasar declared.

He elaborated on the importance of the Tribal Market in Imphal, established to promote tribal commerce. However, he pointed out that the minister’s year-long absence has stalled critical developments.

“The growth of the market and other tribal-related issues have been severely hampered. Minister Haokip’s absence has also affected two other departments under his charge, which are now struggling,” Kasar noted.

Kasar emphasized the need for the minister’s replacement and confirmed that the nine civil bodies are united in their efforts.

Moreover, Kasar called on concerned groups to halt their demands for money and intimidation of businesses, specifically in areas such as Khuman Lampak, North AOC, and Mantripukhri.

“These ongoing monetary demands have forced some establishments to close. Such threats and intimidation must end,” he asserted.

He warned that such actions could lead to serious consequences and advocated for resolving issues through empathetic and civil discussions.

The nine organizations involved in this appeal include the IPF, Manipur Naga Youth Organisation, Imagi Meira, Youth of Manipur, Rongmei Naga Council Manipur, Rongmei Naga Luhphwam Imphal area, United Meitei Pangal Committee Manipur, Tribal Market Management Committee, and Helpline Team Imphal.
