In a significant security operation, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) intercepted and seized a substantial quantity of gold from two passengers at Imphal Airport on Monday afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off, CISF personnel intensified screening processes at the airport. Around 1:30 PM, during an X-BIS (X-ray Baggage Inspection System) scan, officials discovered undeclared gold in the hand baggage of two passengers scheduled to fly to Guwahati on Indigo flight 6E-6342.
The passengers, identified as Lourembam Ramananda Mangang and Kshetrimayum Gulson Meitei, were carrying 312.91 grams and 310.61 grams of gold respectively. Both were promptly detained for attempting to smuggle gold without declaring it.
CISF officials, under the direction of senior officers, meticulously inspected the passengers’ baggage after suspicious items were flagged during the screening process. The gold was concealed in a manner designed to evade detection, reflecting sophisticated smuggling techniques.
Upon confirmation of the illegal consignment, CISF personnel moved quickly to apprehend Mangang and Meitei, ensuring that both individuals were held for further questioning. The gold, worth several lakhs of rupees, was seized as evidence.
Following the seizure, the detained passengers and the confiscated gold were handed over to the Customs Division. Customs officials are now conducting a thorough investigation to trace the origin of the gold and identify any broader smuggling network that may be involved.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the gold was intended to be sold in markets where demand for the precious metal is high, given its significant value and the ongoing festive season.
This operation underscores the critical role of CISF in safeguarding India’s airports against illegal activities. Enhanced vigilance and the use of advanced screening technologies have proven effective in intercepting contraband items, thereby maintaining the integrity of airport security protocols.
In recent months, there has been a marked increase in attempts to smuggle gold through northeastern states, with Imphal Airport becoming a focal point for such activities. Authorities have responded by increasing surveillance and implementing stricter checks to curb these illegal practices.
The successful interception and seizure of gold at Imphal Airport by CISF personnel highlights the ongoing efforts to thwart smuggling operations. The collaboration between CISF and Customs ensures that those involved in such illegal activities are brought to justice, reinforcing the message that smuggling will not be tolerated.
