The Indian government has authorized the immediate deployment of 20 additional Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies to Manipur in response to increasing violence in the region. This contingent includes 15 companies from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and 5 from the Border Security Force (BSF).

Following recent violent incidents in Manipur, particularly in Jiribam, the central government has decided to bolster security by dispatching 20 additional CAPF companies. This move aims to stabilize the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

According to a communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the deployment is effective immediately and will continue until November 30, 2024. The decision was communicated to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in Manipur. The government of Manipur has been instructed to coordinate with CAPF units to finalize the deployment strategy.

This reinforcement increases the total number of CAPF companies in Manipur to 218, including units from CRPF, Rapid Action Force (RAF), BSF, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

The decision follows a series of violent events, including an incident on Monday where 11 Kuki militants were killed in a confrontation with CRPF personnel in Jiribam district. Reports indicate that the militants had earlier torched several shops in Jakuradhor Karong.

In another disturbing event, Kuki militants attacked a relief camp in Borobekra, killing two elderly internally displaced persons and abducting six individuals, including three minors. While five captives have been rescued, the whereabouts of the remaining abductees remain unknown.

In response to these attacks, joint security operations have intensified in the region. Police and CRPF teams conducted a significant search operation in Champanagar, resulting in the discovery of concealed arms and ammunition, including double-barrel guns and a mortar.

During the attacks, a CRPF constable sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment in Silchar, Assam.

The additional deployment of CAPF companies is part of a broader strategy to restore peace and security in Manipur. The central government and state authorities continue to collaborate closely, ensuring the safety and stability of the region amid ongoing violence.
