Dr. Nongthombam Suraj Kumar and his team of medical professionals have accomplished a groundbreaking life-saving procedure employing endoscopic ultrasound at ILDS Hospital, situated in Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi, Imphal.
During a briefing with the media today in the Board Room of the hospital, Dr. Nongthombam Suraj, the Chief of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Advanced Endoscopy, and Director of ILDS Hospital, disclosed that the innovative procedure was collaboratively performed by his team, comprising Dr. Roshlin Keisham in Gastroenterology, Dr. Longjam Chittaranjan Singh as a Liver Transplant surgeon, and Dr. Ningthoujam Surkanta Meeteie as the Chief of GI and Liver transplant Anesthesia.
Dr. Suraj conveyed that this was the 52nd successful procedure conducted by his team, exclusive to ILDS Hospital in the entire North East India region.
“This procedure is crucial for patients suffering from liver cirrhosis with bleeding (Fundal varix) or splenic vein thrombosis with fundal varix, manifesting symptoms like vomiting large amounts of blood, passing black stools, dizziness, and low blood pressure, which can lead to rapid fatality if not addressed promptly,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, Dr. Suraj articulated that one effective method to address this condition is by utilizing a sophisticated apparatus known as endoscopic ultrasound, featuring a special endoscope with an ultrasound probe.
“Using this equipment (Olympus ME-3), the fundal varix is pinpointed, and multiple coils (Nester embolization coils) are introduced, followed by the application of cyanoacrylate glue through a 19G needle (Boston scientific), resulting in immediate solidification and cessation of blood flow in the varix,” he elaborated.
Additionally, Dr. Suraj noted that this is a one-time procedure entailing minimal risk to the patient.
