In a recent session, the Manipur State Cabinet unfolded a comprehensive array of transformative decisions, casting a strategic spotlight on the upcoming 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly scheduled to commence on February 28, 2024.
A standout decision involves the compassionate approval of a ‘liberalized pension’ for the family of the late SDPO Chingtham Anandkumar, who tragically lost his life in a targeted attack by Kuki militants in Moreh. In an additional gesture of support, Anandkumar’s son, Chingtham Andry, is poised to assume the role of Assistant Sub-Inspector in the Manipur Police.
The government’s commitment to fostering gender inclusivity and empowerment takes center stage with the green light given to the introduction and subsequent passage of the State Commission for Women’s Rule 2024. This significant move underscores the administration’s dedication to advancing the welfare and rights of women within the state.
Acknowledging the tireless efforts of State forces and commandos in maintaining law and order, the Cabinet has judiciously approved a monthly compensatory allowance. This progressive step includes Rs 5000 for Manipur commandos and Rs 3000 for personnel serving in challenging and vulnerable areas.
The legislative front will witness an impactful initiative with the introduction of the ‘Name of Places Bill’ during the forthcoming Assembly session. This legislative move aims to systematically name locations for enhanced clarity and governance.
The commitment to reinforcing local security is exemplified by the unanimous agreement to extend the service period for Village Defence Forces (VDF) by an additional year.
Efforts to streamline official appointments and enhance efficiency in governance are underscored by the Cabinet’s approval of amendments to the Manipur Municipalities Act. Notably, Health Officers, Engineers, or Revenue Officers of any Panchayat will now be appointed by the Government, ensuring a more systematic approach to governance.
Addressing the challenges faced by farmers amidst ongoing conflicts, the Cabinet has taken a compassionate stance by sanctioning the ‘Ex-Gratia cum Financial Assistance Scheme for Violence Affected People.’ This expanded scheme now covers Army, Assam Rifles, and CAPF personnel posted in Manipur. An allocation of Rs 18.91 crore has been earmarked to aid affected farmers in the first phase.
These sweeping decisions collectively showcase the government’s commitment to proactive governance, addressing diverse challenges, and fostering the overall welfare and stability of Manipur in a strategic and inclusive manner.
