A fresh arson attack occurred early Wednesday morning in Jiribam district, Manipur, when suspected ‘tribal village volunteers’ set fire to a house belonging to a retired police officer. The property, a three-room residence in Jakuradhor, had been previously vacated by the family due to earlier violence in the district.
According to police reports, armed individuals carried out the attack at approximately 3:30 a.m. The house, situated 28 kilometers from the Jiribam district headquarters and near the Hmar-dominated Pherzawl district, was targeted under the cover of darkness.
This incident occurred despite a recent agreement aimed at restoring order and preventing further violence. On August 1, representatives from the Meitei and Hmar communities met at a CRPF facility in Assam’s Cachar district to discuss measures for normalizing the situation. The meeting, facilitated by the Jiribam district administration, Assam Rifles, and CRPF personnel, also included representatives from the Thadou, Paite, and Mizo communities.
