The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has been reimposed in Imphal Valley, Manipur, due to ongoing ethnic violence. This move, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, reinstates AFSPA in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Bishnupur districts, which had been excluded from the act since April 1, 2023.

The reinstatement of AFSPA comes in response to the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which erupted on May 3. The unrest has resulted in over 180 deaths and extensive displacement. The AFSPA grants the armed forces extensive powers, including the ability to search, arrest, and use force without a warrant.

Manipur has faced a prolonged period of instability, with ongoing efforts to restore peace and order. The reimposition of AFSPA aims to address the escalating violence and enhance security measures in the affected regions.

The Ministry of Home Affairs emphasized that the decision was made considering the current law and order situation in the state. The government continues to monitor the situation closely, seeking to ensure the safety and security of the population.
