Social activist Malem Thongam has announced her intention to stage a suicide protest in front of the Chief Minister’s bungalow on October 7, citing the Manipur government’s failure to address her demands related to the ongoing violence in the state.

Malem Thongam, a prominent transgender rights activist, warned the government of her decision during a media briefing on October 4. She holds the 45 ruling BJP MLAs responsible for the lack of response to her memorandum submitted on September 20. Her demands include the restoration of peace and the withdrawal of 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs from Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s administration.

Since May 3, 2023, Manipur has witnessed severe violence, with Kuki-Zo militants allegedly attacking Meitei villages. Thongam claims these acts are supported by the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs seeking separate administration, which has led to numerous deaths and missing persons in Kuki-dominated areas.

Thongam criticized the BJP-led government for inaction against the Kuki-Zo MLAs and questioned the retention of two Kuki-Zo cabinet ministers. She previously filed RTI applications to Chief Minister Biren Singh and BJP state president A. Sharda Devi, seeking explanations for the government’s inaction.

After serving a 10-day ultimatum, Thongam reiterated her plan to commit suicide if no action is taken by October 7 at 3 PM. She emphasized that her decision is independent and that the ruling MLAs would bear full responsibility for her death.

The situation highlights the severe tensions and ongoing conflict in Manipur, with activists like Thongam taking extreme measures to demand government accountability and resolution of the crisis.
