In a development that underscores the complexities of maintaining peace in Manipur, the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the government and militant groups has remained in effect despite its formal expiry on July 31. The SoO, a crucial instrument in maintaining stability in the region, continues to bind 20 militant groups, including the Kuki National Front (KNF), the United Revolutionary Front (URF), and the Zomi Revolutionary Front (ZRF).

The SoO, first signed in 2008, marked a significant turning point in Manipur’s history, as it brought together rival militant groups and the government in a shared commitment to peace. The agreement has been instrumental in reducing violent incidents and militant activities, creating an environment conducive to dialogue and reconciliation.

According to official sources, the government and militant groups have mutually agreed to continue observing the ceasefire, despite the formal agreement’s expiry. This decision reflects the parties’ commitment to maintaining the hard-won peace and stability in the region.

The SoO’s continuation is also seen as a testament to the efforts of security forces, who have worked tirelessly to ensure the agreement’s success. Their vigilance has been crucial in preventing the resurgence of militant activities and maintaining the trust of local communities.

However, the situation remains fragile, with emerging challenges that require careful attention. The government and security forces are working to address these concerns, engaging with local stakeholders and militant groups to ensure the continued success of the SoO.

The continuation of the Suspension of Operations in Manipur, despite its formal expiry, is a significant development in the region’s quest for peace. As the situation evolves, it is essential for all stakeholders to remain committed to the agreement’s principles, ensuring that the fragile peace is consolidated and built upon. With the SoO remaining in effect, Manipur stands at a critical juncture, poised to embrace a future free from the shackles of militancy and violence.
