Seiminthang Lenthang, the Additional District Magistrate of Churachandpur, issued an order on Tuesday for the disposal of an unidentified and unclaimed woman’s body discovered in the drainage along IB Road on May 27.

The post-mortem was conducted by the Forensic Medical Team of JNIMS, Imphal, on June 20, adhering to all necessary protocols, according to the order.

Efforts to identify and claim the body were extensive, involving publicity by the Women Police Station, Churachandpur, in local newspapers, social media, and WT messages sent to all police station officers-in-charge in Manipur.

Despite these efforts, the deceased remains unidentified, and no claims have been made for the body, the order stated.

The body, kept at the District Hospital Morgue in Churachandpur, began decomposing, posing health risks and creating a public nuisance, the order noted.

The officer-in-charge of the Women Police Station, Churachandpur District, has been directed to dispose of the unidentified body in accordance with existing rules and procedures.

It is preferred that the last rites be conducted according to the deceased’s religion, if known, in a respectful manner, the order mentioned.

The order also referenced a police report (Memo No. 52/WPS-CCP/2024/1173 dated June 25) submitted to the Additional District Magistrate by the Women Police Station, Churachandpur District, relating to UD Case No. 02/WPS-CCP/2024 under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, dated May 27, concerning the disposal of the unclaimed body from IB Road.

The body was deposited at the District Hospital Morgue on May 27, the order added.

The body of the woman, with dismembered limbs, was found in a drain opposite Lamka Central High School on IB Road at around 7 a.m. on May 27. Several limbs, including the nose and ears, were missing, making identification difficult and suggesting the body may have been dumped during the night.
