Lawyers from the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) conducted a sit-in protest against the central government’s alleged divide-and-rule policy at the Cheirap Court complex gate on Friday.
The protest, held under the slogan “One nation, One state. Stop divide and rule policy,” aimed to highlight the growing issues in Manipur.
AMBA president P Tomcha condemned the arson and destruction of Meitei homes and the forced displacement of Meitei people.
“Meiteis criticized the central government for its perceived inaction, despite repeatedly acknowledging external aggression in parliamentary sessions,” Tomcha said.
He pointed out the inconsistency where law and order are state responsibilities, but illegal immigration falls under central jurisdiction. He noted that the Meiteis are concerned about the government’s narrative that fuels divisions between Meitei and Kuki communities, which he believes has contributed to ongoing violence and a divide-and-rule strategy, particularly in areas like Jiribam.
Former acting chairperson of the Manipur Human Rights Commission, Khaidem Mani, stated that Manipur is in a state of “suspended animation,” comparing it to a frozen or lifeless state.
He criticized the state government, alleging that major decisions are being controlled by the Director General of Police (DGP) and the security advisor under the direct supervision of the central Home Ministry.
He also criticized the exclusion of the Manipur Chief Minister from meetings with the security advisor and DGP Manipur at the Centre with Amit Shah regarding the Manipur issue.
“It was an executive meeting, and as the head of the executive of Manipur, the chief minister should have been included,” Khaidem Mani said.
