Self-styled NSCN (I-M) captain RS Winson and seven Tangkhul individuals were killed by KNA (B) militants in a gunfight near the Indo-Myanmar border in Ango Ching, Tengnoupal district, Manipur, on Sunday around 5:45 pm.
Sources reported that RS Winson’s team intercepted KNA (B) militants who had infiltrated Manipur from Myanmar at Ango Ching, near Penjang village under Machi Block.
The KNA (B) militants, crossing into India, were heading towards Heirok when they encountered the NSCN (I-M) cadres. Security has been tightened in the area following the incident.
The NSCN (I-M) held a condolence service for RS Winson, Naga Army of Ngainga village, at TNL Hall in Ukhrul district at 5 pm.
Meanwhile, the Rilram Area Maring Organisation (RAMO) urged the United Naga Council (UNC) and the All Naga Students Association Manipur to survey the influx of refugees from Myanmar into Tamenglong district.
RAMO stated that upon learning of illegal immigrants in Tamenglong district, they began a survey at Chanringphai, Choktong N, Satang, and Sangtong Lamlong Khunou.
The survey revealed that migrants now outnumber local residents, making it difficult for village chiefs to control further encroachment.
RAMO also noted that refugees have been crossing the Indo-Myanmar border intermittently under the watch of Assam Rifles, who have reportedly not intervened.
