Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Monday to address the escalating security situation in Manipur amidst recent outbreaks of violence.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Home Affairs in North Block, Delhi, was attended by key officials including union home secretary Ajay Bhalla, Intelligence Bureau director Tapan Deka, Army chief general Manoj Pande, Army chief designate Lt General Updendra Dwivedi, GoC Three Core HS Sahi, security advisor Kuldiep Singh, chief secretary Vineet Joshi, DGP Rajiv Singh, and Assam Rifles DG Pradeep Chandan Nair.
Notably absent was Chief Minister N Biren Singh, sources confirmed.
Speculation arose from the meeting regarding potential Presidents’ Rule imposition and extensive combing operations in the state.
The summit followed a briefing by Governor Anusuiya Uikey to Amit Shah’s office regarding Manipur’s current unrest.
According to NDTV reports, DGP Rajiv Singh delivered a presentation on the ongoing situation.
Discussions also focused on reviewing the deployment of security forces in Jiribam and addressing the increasing incidents of extortion, highlighting concerns over unrecovered looted arms.
Efforts to achieve peaceful dialogue for resolving the longstanding unrest in Manipur were also a key topic.
Amit Shah issued directives to prevent future violence and announced plans for additional troop deployments as needed.
He instructed Manipur’s chief secretary Vineet Joshi to ensure displaced individuals have access to healthcare, education, and rehabilitation facilities.
Highlighting the importance of a coordinated approach, Shah announced the Ministry of Home Affairs’ initiative to promptly initiate dialogues to bridge ethnic divides.
This meeting marks a significant government response following the return of the NDA, led by Prime Minister Modi, to power.
The recent violence in Jiribam resulted in over 900 individuals being forcibly displaced, with several properties set ablaze by armed assailants.
The violence erupted following the beheading of Soibam Saratkumar by Kuki militants and arson attacks on multiple villages in Jiribam on June 10.
Earlier on Monday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s security convoy was ambushed by Kuki militants near K Senam along NH-37, resulting in injuries to two personnel, including a civilian driver.
In response to the heightened tensions, reinforcements from CRPF, BSF, ITBP, and RAF have been deployed to Manipur, securing various educational institutions across the valley and its outskirts.
