Iranian border guards opened fire on a vehicle carrying Pakistani nationals in a remote southwestern area, killing four and injuring two, Pakistani officials reported on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
The incident took place near the border village of Mashkel in Baluchistan province on Wednesday, according to local police.
Government administrator Sahibzada Asfand stated that the reason for the Iranian forces’ actions is still unknown.
Local police have confirmed that the bodies of the four deceased have been handed over to their families.
There has been no immediate comment from Tehran or Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
The border region frequently sees security forces from both countries arresting smugglers and insurgents.
In January, Pakistan carried out retaliatory strikes against alleged militant hideouts inside Iran, killing at least nine people, following a similar attack by Iranian forces.
