The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) administration has strongly denounced the recent outbreak of violence in Imphal. On Thursday, a group from Lamphel Khunou engaged in disruptive actions, resulting in property damage and injuries to security personnel.
In an official statement released today, RIMS reported that the mob dismantled barricades at the entrance gates and launched an assault on security officers without any apparent provocation. Despite maintaining open access for Lamphel Khunou residents through the eastern gate, RIMS emphasized the necessity of entry restrictions for outsiders due to ongoing security concerns in the region.
The administration clarified that residents of Lamphel Khunou were not subjected to movement restrictions for religious or domestic activities, citing compliance with District Court directives. Allegations made by Lamphel Khunou Meira Paibi Secretary, Karam Chaoba Devi, were dismissed as baseless by RIMS.
RIMS reiterated its condemnation of such violent acts and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and respect the law. The incident has sparked renewed concern over the handling of public security in the area, particularly in light of previous court orders regarding movement restrictions.
Secretary K Chaoba highlighted a court ruling from September 5, 2014, which directed RIMS to refrain from obstructing residents’ movements. However, recent reports suggest that security measures implemented since the appointment of Director G Sunil Kumar Sharma have led to increased tensions and alleged harassment of locals.
Despite fresh court orders issued on February 16, 2024, instructing RIMS to cease blocking certain routes, the institute allegedly continued to erect barricades, exacerbating tensions in the community.
