The Manipur High Court has made waves with its revelation of employing artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT, to address a critical service matter, specifically the case of Md Zakir Hussain v. State of Manipur.
Chief Justice A Guneshwar Sharma emphasized the groundbreaking application of AI technology in overturning the dismissal of a Village Defence Force (VDF) member. The decision underscores the court’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice and legal integrity.
Initially seeking clarity from the government counsel regarding the circumstances surrounding such terminations, Justice Sharma turned to Google and ChatGPT for further insights when faced with ambiguity in the response.
“In light of these circumstances, this Court is compelled to conduct further research through Google and ChatGPT 3.5 to gather pertinent information,” noted the judge in the official order.
With AI assistance, the court acknowledged the pivotal role played by the VDF in enhancing local security and law enforcement efforts, particularly in rural areas of Manipur. Comprising dedicated volunteers from local communities, the VDF is equipped to safeguard villages against various threats, including insurgent activities and communal tensions.
Further scrutiny led to the discovery of an Office Memorandum issued by the Manipur Home Department, outlining the service conditions for VDF personnel. Significantly, the memorandum mandated the issuance of show cause notices to VDF members to address any charges brought against them.
Following a comprehensive examination, the court ruled that the termination order violated the principles of natural justice. Consequently, it ordered the immediate reinstatement of the petitioner, marking a significant legal milestone in service-related matters.
Advocate Ajmal Hussain represented the petitioner, while Government Advocate Shyam Sharma appeared on behalf of the State.
