The Manipur Chemists and Druggists Association (MCDA) has raised concerns regarding the Central government’s proposal to allow the sale of Over-The-Counter (OTC) drugs without a license.
In a joint statement issued by MCDA president RK Rakesh Singh and general secretary Th Dijamani Singh, they highlighted the risks outlined in a memorandum submitted by the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) to various health authorities.
They asserted that the proposed move would violate existing drug laws, pharmacy regulations, and directives from the Supreme Court, as emphasized by AIOCD president JS Shinde and general secretary Rajiv Seighal.
The MCDA emphasized the serious threats posed by the sale of unlicensed OTC drugs, including dangerous self-medication, drug abuse, and the proliferation of counterfeit medications.
They urged the government to carefully consider the multifaceted implications of the proposal, emphasizing its potential adverse effects on society.
With a membership of 12.40 Lakh chemists across the nation, AIOCD staunchly opposes any measures that compromise the integrity of the healthcare system. They also stressed the importance of consulting all relevant stakeholders, including AIOCD, in the formulation of regulations on this matter.
