In Ichamati, situated under Shella constituency in the East Khasi Hills, two individuals tragically lost their lives following a meeting organized by a pressure group on Wednesday evening.
The police informed the press that the deceased, identified as Ishan Singh and Sujit Dutta, were found in Ichamati and Dalda, respectively.
Initial reports suggest that both individuals were beaten to death, and East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, SC Sadhu, noted the presence of stones near the victims’ bodies.
In response, the Deputy Commissioner has assured a comprehensive magisterial inquiry.
Rituraj Ravi, the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), shared with a regional web portal that a Special Operation Team, collaborating with the Crime Scene Unit, has been dispatched to support the Shella Police in maintaining law and order in the area.
While authorities have not disclosed specifics about the assembly, emerging reports hint at a protest organized by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The KSU has yet to issue an official response.
Law enforcement officials are actively probing the incident, exploring all possible angles, including the potential involvement of miscreants.
The reasoning behind staging an anti-CAA protest in Ichamati, an area scheduled beyond the CAA’s jurisdiction, remains unclear, further complicating the situation.
