In Tamenglong and Noney districts, employees, particularly those from the Meitei community, are pleading with the Manipur government and relevant authorities. They’re seeking alternatives for fulfilling their upcoming election duties, rather than being sent to the hill districts, deemed unsafe due to the ongoing crisis.

During a media briefing at the Manipur Press Club in Majorkhul, Imphal on Wednesday, Nongmaithem Hemchandra, one of these employees, revealed that Tamenglong and Noney districts collectively host over 400 Meitei employees. These individuals are slated to serve election duty during the impending 18th Lok Sabha election in these regions.

Expressing concerns about the precarious situation in Manipur, Hemchandra highlighted the apprehension among employees about venturing into the hill districts for their election duties. While acknowledging the necessity of these duties, he emphasized the urgent need to explore alternatives with the authorities, rather than risking employees’ safety in the hill districts.

Questioning the feasibility of employees traveling to Noney and Tamenglong districts for election duty, given the current circumstances, Hemchandra urged the government to designate safe zones for deployment, ensuring employees’ safety in lieu of exposing them to vulnerable areas.
