In ongoing assembly session, Manipur Legislative Assembly champions NRC implementation, a watershed moment highlighting indigenous unity for state and national security. Chief Minister N Biren Singh heralds the occasion, articulating the collective determination of Manipur’s indigenous communities to fortify the state and nation through NRC implementation.
“The 1st of March, 2024, marks a historic event in the Manipur assembly,” declares Chief Minister N Biren Singh. “This united effort showcases the resolve of indigenous communities in Manipur to implement NRC to save the state and the Nation. This is truly a pivotal moment in the Manipur Legislative Assembly’s history.”
The Manipur Legislative Assembly, in its 5th session of the 12th Assembly on March 1, ardently urges the Indian Government to expedite NRC implementation in the state. Echoing a prior resolution from August 5, 2022, this decision underscores the assembly’s steadfast commitment to preserving Manipur’s security and integrity.
Emphasizing the NRC’s significance in protecting the state’s interests and contributing to national welfare, the assembly’s call for swift implementation aims to effectively address citizenship and immigration intricacies, ensuring accountability and transparency in demographic matters.
Amidst this reaffirmation, tension surfaces as Congress MLAs express resentment over the Speaker’s refusal to admit a private member’s resolution on the Kangla Resolution. Despite the opposition’s absence from the discussion, the assembly proceeds with its resolution, emphasizing the urgency of NRC implementation for the state’s benefit. The resolution, initially proposed by MLA Leishiyo Keishing, garners support from various quarters, including the opposition Congress party.
Addressing the media post-session, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi highlights the party’s frustration over the Speaker’s decision. Ibobi emphasizes the importance of restoring peace in the state and expresses disappointment that the assembly did not adopt similar resolutions at Kangla on January 24, despite proposals from Congress MLAs.
