In a unanimous resolution, the Manipur Assembly has called upon the Government of India (GoI) to annul the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact with all Kuki-Zo underground (UG) group militants. Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, addressing the legislative session, asserted that the house collectively urges the GoI to terminate the SoO agreement, which temporarily suspends military operations against these groups.
This development marks a significant shift in the state’s strategy for addressing militancy, as lawmakers voiced concerns and sought the cessation of the SoO pact. Responding to queries raised by Sugnu Congress MLA K Ranjit and MLA Keisham Meghachandra, Speaker Satyabrata Singh emphasized the necessity of discontinuing the agreement with Kuki militant factions.
On February 28, a torch rally unfolded in various valley areas of Manipur, demanding an end to the SoO agreement and the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Organized under the banner of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), the protest garnered support from women, including Meira Paibis, who participated in a rally adorned in red dresses.
The demonstrators, echoing the sentiments of COCOMI’s appeal, called for the enforcement of NRC and the abrogation of the SoO pact with Kuki militants. Additionally, they demanded the removal of Assam Rifles, among other grievances.
Coinciding with the Manipur Legislative Assembly Session, a mass protest was held earlier today morning, echoing the same agenda. The assembly’s unanimous resolution reflects the growing sentiment within the state to reconsider its approach towards dealing with militancy, as citizens actively express their concerns and demands through peaceful demonstrations.
