If you have an insatiable love for travel, your list of dream destinations might seem never-ending. However, if you’re in need of some inspiration, look no further than Luisa Yu, a spirited 79-year-old Filipino American globetrotter who has turned her travel dreams into a reality. Over the past fifty years, she has achieved the incredible feat of exploring 193 countries, serving as a testament to the power of unwavering passion.
Luisa’s journey into the world of travel began in her youth, inspired by the enchanting landscapes of nature, rivers, and mountains that she witnessed in movies. Recalling her early aspirations, she shared, “When I watched movies, I was captivated by the beautiful backdrops of scenery, nature, rivers, and mountains. That fascination fueled my belief that someday, I would visit these places and travel.”
Arriving in the United States as an exchange student at the age of 23, Luisa initially explored within the country due to her status. Embracing the simplicity of Greyhound bus journeys, she traversed different states, relishing the thrill of waking up in a new location each day.
Transitioning from a career in medical technology to becoming a travel agent, Luisa sought greater flexibility to chase her wanderlust. Her adventures over the past five decades spanned European countries like Italy, Asian nations including Thailand, African destinations like Libya, and Middle Eastern gems like Iran.
Motivated by a deep-seated desire to experience the historical and cultural richness of diverse locations, Luisa set an audacious goal to visit all 193 member states of the United Nations, even in areas deemed potentially dangerous. Undeterred, she explained her motivation, stating, “Even in places considered dangerous, I believed I could do it. I wanted to witness the history and culture that unfolded there.”
On November 9, 2023, in Serbia, Luisa triumphantly accomplished her ambitious goal, receiving a warm welcome from supporters who celebrated her remarkable achievement.
Offering words of encouragement to aspiring travelers, Luisa emphasized the significance of taking initiative, advising, “Don’t be afraid, just go. Don’t wait for anybody, because if you wait, it will never happen.” Her journey stands as a testament to the idea that age is no barrier to fulfilling one’s travel dreams, and with determination and courage, anyone can turn their wanderlust into a lifelong adventure.
