In a significant development underscoring the fragile inter-community relations in Manipur, six individuals identified as Kuki-Zo militants were detained by Tangkhul villagers in the Ukhrul district. The incident occurred in the morning hours between Itham and Tangkhul Hundung under the jurisdiction of Litan police station. The detainees were later handed over to Kuki civil society organizations (CSOs) following mediation efforts.

The militants, reportedly tasked with guarding Phailengmol in Kangpokpi district, were intercepted by Tangkhul villagers while traveling through the area. According to reports from the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), the villagers allegedly assaulted the militants, confiscated their vehicles, and seized their personal belongings. Mediation by a civil society leader from Tangkhul Hundung facilitated their eventual release.

COTU condemned the actions of the Tangkhul villagers, characterizing the incident as an unwarranted attack that contradicted the neutrality professed by the Naga community amid ongoing ethnic tensions in the region.

Manipur has long been a hotspot for ethnic disputes, with tensions primarily revolving around land and identity conflicts among various communities, including the Kukis, Nagas, and Meiteis. The recent clashes have further strained relations, with incidents like this highlighting the deep divisions and mistrust prevalent in the state.

COTU has called upon the Naga community in Manipur to uphold their neutrality and to take immediate action against individuals who perpetuate such acts of hostility. The organization issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding that those responsible for the attack be held accountable. It warned that failure to address the issue would lead to Tangkhul Hundung and Singkap areas bearing responsibility for any future escalations.

In their statement, COTU emphasized the critical importance of preserving peace and neutrality amidst the volatile situation. “Such incidents jeopardize the delicate balance we have strived to maintain and risk further fueling ethnic hostilities,” the statement read.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, with calls for dialogue and conflict resolution measures to prevent similar occurrences. Local leaders and activists have reiterated the importance of fostering understanding and cooperation among Manipur’s diverse communities to address longstanding grievances.

This latest episode underscores the precarious state of inter-community relations in Manipur, a state that has witnessed periodic outbreaks of violence over the years. As authorities investigate the incident and CSOs push for accountability, the situation remains tense, with hopes pinned on dialogue and collective efforts to restore peace and stability.

Efforts to mediate and resolve ethnic conflicts will be critical in the coming days as Manipur’s communities navigate a path forward amid deeply entrenched divisions.
