Political analyst Bimol Akoijam has expressed concern over the reimposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Manipur’s Imphal Valley. Akoijam highlighted the potential implications for civil rights and regional stability during a recent public statement.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the reinstatement of AFSPA in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Bishnupur, which had been exempt from the act since April 1, 2023. The decision was prompted by ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which erupted on May 3 and has since resulted in over 180 deaths and widespread displacement.
Akoijam emphasized that the reimplementation of AFSPA could lead to increased military presence and potential human rights violations. He urged the government to consider alternative measures to restore peace and order, advocating for dialogue and reconciliation efforts between conflicting groups.
The reimposition of AFSPA grants the armed forces extensive powers, including the authority to search, arrest, and use force without a warrant. This has raised concerns among human rights activists and local communities about the potential for abuse and the impact on daily life in the affected regions.
Akoijam’s warning underscores the broader debate over AFSPA’s role in addressing internal conflicts while balancing security needs and civil liberties. The situation in Manipur remains tense, with ongoing efforts by the government and civil society to find a resolution to the ethnic violence and ensure the protection of human rights.
