Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has announced the prioritization of establishing a medical college in Thoubal district. This decision follows the virtual foundation stone laying by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a three-storey critical care block at Thoubal District Hospital under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), with a budget exceeding Rs 16 crore.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation for the new critical care block at Thoubal District Hospital. This project is part of a larger initiative to enhance healthcare infrastructure across five states, including Manipur. The block is one of 21 critical care units planned under PM-ABHIM.
Chief Minister Biren emphasized the state government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services. Highlighting the need for medical facilities in both hill and valley regions, Biren noted the prioritization of a medical college in Thoubal due to its growing population. He also mentioned the recent establishment of a medical college in Churachandpur, addressing the lack of such institutions in hill districts.
During the event, Biren urged the public to support government initiatives aimed at improving healthcare. He called for unity among the state’s diverse communities, stressing that fear and division hinder effective policy implementation. Biren reiterated the importance of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which offers cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh for senior citizens over 70 years, irrespective of income.
Biren addressed concerns about illegal immigration, asserting that actions taken are intended to protect indigenous populations. He referenced 1961 as the base year for identifying illegal immigrants, ensuring that the rights of Meitei, Naga, Thadou, Paite, and other communities are safeguarded.
The announcement marks a significant step towards enhancing Manipur’s healthcare infrastructure, aiming to provide better medical education and services. The state government continues to focus on inclusive growth and protection of indigenous identities.
