Tensions continue to escalate in Manipur as another resident of Ukhrul has died amidst ongoing violence. The deceased, identified as YR Pamzeijo Ramlung from Hungpung Village, succumbed to his injuries at JNIMS hospital in Imphal on Thursday morning. This brings the total number of deaths to three, including a 6th Manipur Rifles personnel, as a result of the violent clashes on Wednesday.
The clashes, rooted in a long-standing land dispute between the villages of Hunphun and Hungpung, led to significant casualties. Around 46 individuals were injured during the violence, many of whom were evacuated to Imphal for medical treatment. The unrest has prompted a robust response from security forces.
In response to the looting of 21 firearms from the Ukhrul Police Station by an irate mob, a combined team of district police and Assam Rifles has initiated search operations. The weapons were reportedly taken by villagers from Hunphun. Manipur’s Inspector General of Police (Operations) IK Muivah has arrived in Ukhrul to assess the situation and engage with community leaders from both villages in an effort to de-escalate tensions.
The land dispute between Hunphun and Hungpung dates back to 1929, adding a deep historical context to the recent violence. The ongoing conflict has seen sporadic incidents of violence over the years, but the recent escalation marks one of the more severe outbreaks.
The United Naga Council (UNC) has issued an appeal for calm, urging the villagers to refrain from further violence and seek peaceful resolution. The UNC emphasized the importance of dialogue and reasoning over armed conflict, appealing to both communities to prioritize peace for the greater good of the region.
The situation in Ukhrul remains tense as authorities work to recover the looted arms and restore order. The recent deaths underscore the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing land dispute. Security forces continue to maintain a strong presence in the area to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents.
