Protests by Manipur students at the historic Ima Market have continued to gain momentum as the 24-hour ultimatum issued to Governor Lakshman Acharya approaches its conclusion. The students are demanding immediate action on their grievances and have vowed to escalate their agitation if their demands are not addressed by the stipulated deadline.

The demonstration began outside the Raj Bhawan, where students voiced their concerns over a range of issues, including the recent violence in the state and the alleged lack of response from the government. The protest turned tense when a faction of the protesters resorted to stone-pelting, prompting a strong response from the security forces who dispersed the crowd. Undeterred, the students relocated their protest to the iconic Ima Market, where they have been holding a sit-in demonstration.

The students maintained an overnight vigil at the market, a symbolic location representing the resilience and strength of Manipuri women traders. The protest at Ima Market, which traditionally serves as a bustling hub for commerce, has drawn significant attention and solidarity from various civil society groups and local residents.

In response to the escalating situation, state and central security forces have been deployed in large numbers around the protest site. Security personnel are maintaining a strict vigil to prevent any further incidents of violence. Barricades have been erected, and additional forces have been positioned to ensure public safety and order.

The student leaders have made it clear that their primary demands include a comprehensive response to the recent violence in the state, measures to ensure the safety and security of the residents, and accountability from the state administration. They have also called for a dialogue with the Governor to address their concerns directly.

With the deadline nearing its end at 1 PM today, the atmosphere remains charged with anticipation. The students have warned of intensifying their protests and expanding their demonstrations if their demands are not met within the given timeframe.

The recent surge in student activism in Manipur can be attributed to a series of incidents that have sparked widespread unrest in the state. Reports of violence, alleged human rights violations, and perceived governmental inaction have fueled the protests. The Ima Market, known for its unique tradition of being run exclusively by women, has now become a focal point for expressing collective dissent.

As the 24-hour ultimatum approaches its conclusion, all eyes are on the response from the Governor’s office. The outcome of this standoff could have significant implications for the state’s political landscape and the ongoing efforts to address the concerns raised by the protesting students. Further developments are awaited as the situation continues to evolve.
