Private schools in Manipur are strongly opposing the implementation of the Manipur Private Schools (Regulation and Recognition) Act, 2017, citing concerns over the impact on their autonomy and operations. The All Manipur Recognised Private Schools’ Welfare Association (AMRPSWA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the provisions of the Act, which they claim impose excessive government control and infringe upon the independence of private educational institutions.

According to AMRPSWA, the Act’s requirements, including mandatory government recognition and strict regulatory measures, could lead to significant challenges for private schools. The association has called for a review of the Act, arguing that its implementation would adversely affect the quality of education and increase the financial burden on private institutions.

The Act, which was introduced to ensure quality education and regulate the functioning of private schools in the state, mandates the registration and recognition of all private schools under specific criteria set by the government. It also includes provisions for monitoring and evaluating the performance of these schools.

Despite these intentions, the AMRPSWA contends that the Act could hinder the operational freedom of private schools, potentially leading to a decline in the educational standards they offer. The association is urging the state government to reconsider the Act’s provisions and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to address their concerns.

The situation has created tension between the government and private school operators, with the latter fearing that the Act could disrupt the existing educational framework in Manipur. The government has yet to respond to the demands for a review.
