In an endeavor to counter the surging quandary of unauthorized migration, seven citizens from Myanmar underwent expulsion at Imphal International Airport today. This removal signals the commencement of a broader initiative targeting the deportation of a cumulative 77 individuals from Myanmar spanning March 8 to March 11.

As per disclosures from the Home Department of the regional government, these foreign citizens will be ferried in clusters via helicopters from Imphal to the border settlement of Moreh. The inaugural septet was airlifted from Imphal International Airport to Moreh during the early hours of Friday.

The directive from the Home Department, disseminated on March 5, mandates that the expelled individuals shall be handed over to Myanmar officials at Tummu, the Myanmar precinct of the international border. Over a span of four days, these individuals will undergo expulsion in segments, with the financial responsibility falling under the purview of the state government’s Transport Department.

Supervision of the handover process has been assigned to the immigration officer in Moreh, who will collaborate with counterparts in Tammu. Rigorous protocols have been delineated in the event of any attempted evasion by the deportees, with the edict asserting that they may be apprehended without a warrant and subject to charges under IPC section 224.

Among the 77 Myanmar citizens slated for deportation, reports indicate that 55 are females, five are juveniles, and the remainder are adult males. The issue of infiltration by Myanmar citizens into Manipur has long been a source of concern, intensified by the unfolding political crisis in Myanmar, culminating in a pronounced migration towards the Indian perimeter.

In response to the intensifying conundrum of unauthorized migration, the Government of India imposed a suspension on the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
